John Deere Mini Excavators: A Size and Weight Chart

John Deere groups excavators into three classes by operating weight: compact excavators from 3,800 to 13,500 lbs, mid-size excavators from 16,500 to 90,000 lbs, and large excavators from 103,500 to 188,750 lbs. Operating weight, not horsepower, is the spec that defines the class and determines what you can haul.

Most contractors shop by weight for a practical reason, since weight sets your trailer and truck requirements, your ground pressure, and whether the machine fits the site at all. Here, we’re breaking down the sizing of John Deere’s compact excavator lineup.

John Deere Compact Excavator Sizes

Compact excavators (also called mini excavators) run 3,790 to 13,620 lbs and handle utility trenching, landscaping, residential sitework, and excel in tight spaces like fenced-in areas.

Model Operating Weight Net Horsepower Max Dig Depth
17P 3,790 lbs 14.5 HP 7’2″
26P 6,110 lbs 20 HP 8’6″
30P 7,220 lbs 23 HP 9’2″
35P 8,135 lbs 23.3 HP 10’0″
50P 10,847 lbs 35.9 HP 11’7″
60P 13,620 lbs 53 HP 12’4″

The 35 P-Tier is one of the best sellers in this group, because at 8,135 lbs, it tows behind a three-quarter-ton truck on a suitable trailer and still reaches 10 feet.

The step from the 35 to the 50 P-Tier is the one to think hardest about. You gain 2,700 lbs, 12 more horsepower, and 19 inches of reach, but you also move into heavier trailer territory.

How To Choose the Right Excavator Size

When sizing for your crew, it’s easier to work backward from your constraints rather than forward from your wish list, and these three questions will usually settle it.

  1. How deep do you actually dig? Buying 25 feet of reach to dig 9-foot trenches is money sitting idle.
  2. How tight is the site? Access width and swing clearance rule out machines that otherwise fit the job.
  3. What is the ground like? Soft or sloped ground favors more weight and wider tracks.

Match the machine to your most common job rather than your biggest one, and rent for the outlier.

What Does Operating Weight Really Tell You?

Operating weight tells you a few important things at once: what it takes to haul the machine, how much force it can apply without tipping, and how much ground pressure you should plan for. Heavier machines dig harder in dense material, but that same weight is a liability on finished surfaces and soft ground. That’s why you shouldn’t consider only digging depth when purchasing your excavator—where a 17P and 60P can get the job done, a 17P is likely a safer choice.
