Winterize John Deere Excavators: Northeast Fleet Maintenance Guide

Winter in the Northeast can be brutal on your excavator. Whether you manage a single machine or a multi-site fleet across the Northeast, proper winter preparation will prevent costly downtime and extend the life of your equipment, no matter the conditions.

Switch to Winter-Grade Fluids

Extremely cold temperatures can cause standard fluids to run slowly. Transition to cold-weather hydraulic oil, engine oil, and diesel additives rated for low temperatures. This is essential to minimize unnecessary strain on your engine, boost responsiveness, and help your excavator start up every time.

Be sure to check your coolant mixture. Refer to your owner’s manual for the proper antifreeze ratio to protect your machine through the winter.

Battery Health & Cold-Start Prep

Cold weather will drain your battery. Have each of your excavators’ batteries load-tested and replace any with weak readings before they freeze. Clean and tighten all terminals, confirm block heater operation, and plan trickle charging for machines that will sit idle for long periods of time. A healthy battery is the fastest path to reliable cold starts.

Inspect Undercarriage and Track Systems

Mud, ice, and packed snow can damage undercarriage components and accelerate wear. Now is the time to inspect track tension, rollers, idlers, sprockets, pins, and bushings. Remove packed debris, correct tension to spec (neither loose nor overtight), and address wear early to avoid derailment or costly repairs.

Best Practices for Winter Operation

Even well-maintained machines need to be handled properly in the winter. Allow extra time for warm-up before operating under load. Use JDLink to manage your fleet and monitor machine health, flagging signs of issues before they become expensive problems.

Keep cabs and glass clean, and ensure all lights function as expected. It sounds simple, but maximum visibility in reduced daylight is a safety necessity.
